Block Editor

March 7, 2026 by jumedeenkhan

The block editor, nicknamed Gutenberg during development, is the default way to create content in modern WordPress. Instead of one long text field, you build a page from individual blocks — paragraphs, images, buttons, columns, and more.

It replaced the older Classic Editor starting with WordPress 5.0, shifting toward a more visual, drag-and-drop style of editing.

What Makes It Different

Each block is its own self-contained element with its own settings. Want to change an image’s size or a paragraph’s color? You click that specific block and adjust it, without affecting anything else on the page.

This modular approach also means plugins can add entirely new block types — pricing tables, testimonials, forms — that slot right into the same editing experience as core blocks.

Getting Comfortable With It

If you’re used to the old Classic Editor, the block editor can feel different at first. A good way to start is by using just a few block types — paragraphs, headings, and images — before exploring more advanced layout blocks like columns and groups.
