Update

March 7, 2026 by jumedeenkhan

An update refreshes WordPress core, a theme, or a plugin to a newer version — usually bringing bug fixes, security patches, or new features.

Your dashboard will typically notify you when updates are available, often with a small number badge in the menu so you don’t miss them.

Why Updates Matter

Outdated plugins and themes are one of the most common ways WordPress sites get hacked, since known vulnerabilities in old versions become public and easy for attackers to exploit. Staying reasonably current is one of the simplest things you can do for site security.

A Word of Caution

While updates are important, it’s wise to back up your site before applying major updates, especially for themes or plugins central to your site’s design. Occasionally an update can conflict with something else on your site, and a backup gives you an easy way back if that happens.

Testing significant updates on a staging site first, before applying them to your live site, is an even safer approach if that option is available to you.
