Block

July 30, 2026 by jumedeenkhan

In WordPress, a block is a single piece of content you can add to a page or post — a paragraph, an image, a heading, a button, or even a full section like a gallery. Instead of writing one long blob of text, you build your page piece by piece.

Each block can be moved, styled, and edited independently. This makes it much easier to rearrange content or fix a single section without disturbing everything else on the page.

Common Types of Blocks

  • Text blocks — paragraphs, headings, lists, and quotes.
  • Media blocks — images, videos, and galleries.
  • Layout blocks — columns, groups, and spacers used to structure a page.
  • Widget blocks — things like buttons, tables, and embeds.

Why Blocks Matter

Before blocks, formatting a WordPress page often meant fighting with a single text editor to get layouts right. The block system, introduced with the Gutenberg editor, replaced that with a drag-and-drop approach that feels closer to using a design tool.

Plugins and themes can also add their own custom blocks, which is how features like pricing tables, testimonials, or contact forms get added to the editor without any coding.
