In WordPress, an author is a user role assigned to someone who can write, edit, and publish their own posts. It’s one of several built-in roles that control what a person can and can’t do on a site.
An author can manage their own content freely, but they can’t edit posts written by other users or change site-wide settings — that’s reserved for higher roles like Editor and Administrator.
Author vs Other Roles
It helps to compare it with nearby roles. A Contributor can write posts but can’t publish them without approval. An Author can publish their own work directly. An Editor goes further, able to manage everyone’s content across the site.
Author Pages
Most WordPress themes automatically generate a public author page listing everything a particular writer has published, along with a short bio if one is added to their profile. This is common on multi-author blogs and news sites where readers might want to follow a specific writer.
