Breadcrumbs are a small trail of links, usually near the top of a page, showing visitors where they are in your site’s structure. A typical example looks like this: Home > Blog > Web Design > This Article.
The name comes from the fairy tale where breadcrumbs were dropped to help find the way back — the concept here is much the same, just for website navigation.
Why They’re Useful
Breadcrumbs make it easy to jump back to a broader section without hitting the back button repeatedly. They’re especially helpful on sites with deep categories, like online stores or large knowledge bases with many nested topics.
Search engines also read breadcrumb structure, and sometimes display it directly in search results instead of a plain URL, which can make your listing look cleaner and more organized.
Adding Breadcrumbs in WordPress
WordPress doesn’t include breadcrumbs by default. Most sites add them through an SEO plugin or a theme feature, since these tools can automatically build the trail based on your category and page structure.
