A category is a broad grouping used to organize your posts by topic. If you run a food blog, your categories might be “Breakfast,” “Desserts,” and “Dinner.” Every post typically belongs to at least one category.

Categories help visitors browse content that interests them and give search engines a clearer sense of how your site is structured.

Categories vs Tags

People often mix these up, so it’s worth clarifying. Categories are broad and hierarchical — you might have “Desserts” as a parent category with “Cakes” as a subcategory underneath it. Tags are more specific, non-hierarchical keywords, like “chocolate” or “gluten-free,” that can apply across multiple categories.

Keeping Categories Organized

A common mistake is creating too many categories, or one for nearly every post. It’s usually better to keep a smaller set of clear, meaningful categories — somewhere between five and fifteen works well for most sites — rather than dozens of overlapping ones that confuse readers.
