Domain Name

March 7, 2026 by jumedeenkhan

A domain name is the human-friendly address people type to reach your website, like example.com, instead of a hard-to-remember string of numbers.

Behind the scenes, every website actually lives at a numeric IP address. Domain names exist purely to make the internet usable for people, translating easy-to-remember names into those numeric addresses automatically.

Parts of a Domain Name

Take “www.example.com” as an example. “example” is the actual name you choose, and “.com” is the extension, known as a top-level domain. Other common extensions include .org, .net, and country-specific ones like .co.uk.

Choosing a Good Domain Name

  • Keep it short and easy to spell.
  • Avoid hyphens and numbers where possible.
  • Make sure it reflects your brand or topic clearly.

Domain Names Are Rented, Not Owned

You don’t buy a domain outright — you register it for a period of time, usually a year, and renew it to keep control of it. Letting registration lapse can mean losing the domain entirely, sometimes to someone else who registers it after you.
