Extension

March 7, 2026 by jumedeenkhan

The term “extension” can mean a couple of different things depending on context, and both come up fairly often when working with WordPress sites.

File Extensions

Most commonly, an extension refers to the letters after the dot in a filename — like .jpg for images, .zip for compressed files, or .php for WordPress’s core programming language files. It tells your computer and browser what type of file it’s dealing with.

Browser Extensions

The word also refers to small add-ons you install in your web browser, like Chrome or Firefox, to add extra features — ad blockers, password managers, or SEO analysis tools are common examples.

Some browser extensions are specifically built for WordPress users, offering quick access to site diagnostics or SEO checks directly while browsing a page, without needing to log into the dashboard.

Not to Be Confused With Plugins

It’s worth noting that a browser extension and a WordPress plugin are entirely different things. A plugin runs on your WordPress site itself; a browser extension runs inside your personal browser and doesn’t affect the site for other visitors.
