PHP

March 7, 2026 by jumedeenkhan

PHP is the programming language WordPress is built with. It runs on the server, processing logic and pulling data from the database before sending finished HTML to a visitor’s browser.

Unlike JavaScript, which typically runs in the browser, PHP does its work entirely on the server, before the page ever reaches the visitor.

A Simple Example

<?php
echo "Hello, world!";
?>

This snippet outputs plain text to the page. In a real WordPress theme, PHP is used for far more — pulling post titles from the database, looping through content, and generating dynamic pages on the fly.

Do You Need to Learn PHP?

Not for everyday WordPress use — the block editor and plugins handle most day-to-day tasks without any code. Learning some basic PHP becomes useful mainly if you want to build custom themes, plugins, or make deeper technical customizations.

Keeping PHP Updated

Your hosting account runs a specific PHP version behind the scenes. Keeping it reasonably current, as recommended by WordPress, tends to improve both site speed and security.
