SSH

March 7, 2026 by jumedeenkhan

SSH, short for Secure Shell, is a way to connect directly to your web server using a command-line interface, giving you a much deeper level of control than a typical hosting dashboard offers.

Rather than clicking through menus, you type commands directly, letting you manage files, run scripts, or perform tasks that would be slow or impossible through a standard control panel.

Who Actually Uses SSH

SSH access is mainly used by developers, or by tools like WP-CLI, which lets you manage a WordPress site entirely through commands — installing plugins, updating content, and running maintenance tasks quickly at scale.

Is SSH Required?

Not for typical site management. Most WordPress owners never need to touch SSH at all, since the dashboard and FTP handle everyday tasks perfectly well. It becomes more relevant for advanced troubleshooting, bulk operations, or custom development work.

Not every hosting plan includes SSH access by default, so it’s worth checking with your provider if you or a developer specifically need it.
