A thumbnail is a small, resized version of an image, used to give a quick visual preview without loading the full-size file. You’ll see thumbnails in blog listings, galleries, and the Media Library grid.
In WordPress, “thumbnail” is also an older term for what’s now more commonly called the Featured Image — the main image representing a post or page.
Why Thumbnails Matter for Speed
Loading a full-resolution image just to display it small would waste bandwidth and slow down your page. WordPress automatically generates several smaller thumbnail sizes whenever you upload an image, so the browser can load only what’s actually needed for that layout.
Default Thumbnail Sizes
WordPress generates a few default sizes automatically — thumbnail, medium, and large — though your specific theme may add its own custom sizes too, tailored to where images appear throughout the design.
