Widgets are small, self-contained pieces of content or functionality you can add to specific areas of your site, like a sidebar or footer — things like a search box, recent posts list, or social media links.
Historically, widgets and blocks were two separate systems in WordPress. Today, the block editor has largely absorbed widget functionality, letting you use the same blocks in widget areas as you would in a regular post.
Common Widget Areas
- Sidebars, common on blogs.
- Footers, often used for site info or quick links.
- Some themes include additional widget areas, like a homepage panel.
Managing Widgets Today
In modern block themes, widget areas are typically edited directly through the Site Editor as part of your header or footer template, rather than a separate dedicated Widgets screen used by older, classic themes.
