WordPress

July 30, 2026 by jumedeenkhan

WordPress is a free, open-source platform used to build and manage websites. It started out as blogging software back in 2003, but today it powers everything from personal blogs to large business sites and online stores.

You don’t need to know how to code to use it. WordPress gives you a dashboard where you can write posts, add pages, upload images, and customize your site’s design — all through a visual interface.

Two Versions: WordPress.org vs WordPress.com

This often confuses beginners, so it’s worth clarifying early. WordPress.org is the free, self-hosted software you install on your own hosting account, giving you full control over plugins, themes, and code.

WordPress.com is a hosted service built on that same software, where the technical setup is handled for you. Most people referring to “WordPress” as a platform to build a custom site mean the self-hosted WordPress.org version.

Why It’s So Popular

WordPress runs a huge share of all websites on the internet, and that scale brings real advantages. There’s a massive library of themes and plugins that add features like contact forms, SEO tools, and online shops without writing a line of code.

It’s also actively maintained and regularly updated for security and performance, with a large community that shares tutorials, support, and free resources.

Getting Started

Most beginners start by choosing a hosting provider, installing WordPress, picking a theme, and then adding content through the built-in block editor. From there, plugins can extend the site with almost any feature you can imagine.
